General Guidelines
As homework, I ask that students read a minimum of 20 minutes outside of school every day. Students should have a reading log (located in their homework folder) that needs to be signed by a parent/guardian each day to signify the student has read.
Students should also ask to have their parents read their agendas. Each day students will fill out their agenda, which will include all the tasks completed during the day. (If parents are unsure about homework for the day, they should consult their student's agenda.) If a task was written on the daily schedule, it was most likely completed during the day. Any work on the schedule not completed during class will become homework unless otherwise specified.
Aside from reading 20 minutes and asking their parents for signatures, students may have math homework. During the school day, students will receive time to work on their problems and will usually finish in class. (As the year progresses and math tasks become more difficult, students may not be able to finish in class.) Occasionally students will have a test and on these days, students will not have any math homework.
Additionally, students will have a spelling test and reading test almost every Friday. Spelling words will be passed out on Monday of every week alongside the weekly vocabulary words. Students will practice these words during the school day as they read their weekly story, but any additional practice at home is welcome! We work in seven week units. The first five weeks of a unit will have spelling and reading tests. In the final two weeks of a unit, the students will not have any assessments. They will spend time writing an essay that summarizes the unit of study.
Students should be able to complete all Science and Social Studies tasks during class time. However as stated above, any unfinished classwork will become homework.
I follow the policy of two days for late work. This means that students will have two days after the initial due date to turn in any classwork/homework. If work is not turned in by this time, a zero score will be applied. (If there are any extenuating circumstances in which the two day deadline cannot be met, please contact me to discuss the matter.)
